COPUOS

About the COPUOS

In 1959, the General Assembly established the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. This committee was to act as a vehicle for international cooperation with regards to the exploration of Space. The committee was further mandated with devising programs to be completed by the United Nations member states and encouraging research into legal issues pertaining to the exploration of outer space. In 1961, the General Assembly asked both the committee and Security-General to collaborate. This collaboration was to ensure that contact is maintained with both government and non- government organizations associated with the exploration of outer space. The Committee also encourages an exchange of information concerning outer space activity, which governments may provide on a voluntary basis.

Committee Co-Chairs

Benjamin Burgar

Hey Guys, my name is Benjamin Burgar, and I’m a third year politics student from Nova Scotia. This year will be my third year at QMUN and I am really excited to take a more active role as Co-Chair of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of OuterSpace. The thing that always strikes me the most about MUNs is how productive they are. I’m always left pondering the following: what would happen if the real leaders of these countries had the courage to implement the bold and creative strategies that a bunch of students came up with in just three days? The thing is, someday we may be in positions to actually carry out some of the resolutions that we pass during a mostly serious yet fun weekend. Weird eh?Anyways, enough rambling. I’m super pumped for QMUN this year and I look forward to meeting all of you.

Jessica Steeves

Hey there! My name is Jessica Steeves and I am one of the two committee chairs for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. I am currently in my third year at Queen’s where I am working to complete my undergraduate degree in geological engineering. I call Oakville, Ontario home. My passion for various international issues led me to QMUN. I am very excited to meet all my delegates and experience QMUN 2011 together!
